JOAN ANDREWS HLAA CONVENTION SCHOLARSHIP
HLAA National Convention Scholarship: The Joan Andrews Scholarship remains in effect thanks to Joan Andrew’s daughters.
All Chapters are welcome and encouraged to participate in the Walk4Hearing Saturday, November 12, 2016, in Jacksonville, Florida. Participating Chapters should confirm your Chapter 990 is current and officers are current HLAA members. This will be a fun time for everyone to connect – the hearing and hearing loss alike to make hearing loss visible. You can participate whether you physically attend the walk or not. Jim Scott will discuss improving the lives of those living with hearing loss and the options to loop facilities around the Villages and statewide. The meeting room is looped for your hearing assistance.

Guest Speaker: Ed Ogiba, HLAA Clearwater Outreach Chair
Topic: The Smartest and Easiest Ways to Improve Your Hearing. Discussions on the basics with how to improve understanding of speech in noisy situations by as much as 40%. How the brain defines the ability to hear and training that can help restore lost hearing. The latest technologies make it easier to hear at theaters, movies, on the phone and at home and how HLAA can make a difference with the education and support tools you have overlooked.

November 10th Pot Luck Dinner and Veteran Services!
Guest Speaker: Sherman Roberts, Veteran Service Officer in Polk County.
Sherman Roberts, Florida native, joined the US Army at the age of 18, completing Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Ft Benning GA as an Infantryman. Sherman spent the next 24 years serving overseas in Germany and Korea, and here in the US. He was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Desert Storm/Shield as well as Bosnia and served in every position from team member to the highest enlisted Army rank of Sergeant Major, performing in leadership position from Team Leader to First Sergeant. Upon retirement in 2011, he began a BBQ Catering company, donating all profits to Veteran Organizations and founded a Not-for-Profit Organization named “All Gave Some, Inc.”, which is focused on helping Veterans and first responders improve and/or maintain their standard of living. Sherman currently works as a Veteran Service Officer in Polk County. He is married with with two children and three grand kids. The son currently serves in the Air Force and has completed three tours in Afghanistan.

Kris Adams, ENP, Emergency Number Professional, will speak about “Text-2-911″and your options to contact 911 in the event of an emergency by call or text. She has worked with the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office in the Emergency Operations Bureau (911 Dispatch Center) for 18 ½ years. She is presently the current Operations Manager in charge of the Professional Development section (911 Training) in charge of supervising and coordinating new recruit training, cross training, continuing education, public education and quality assurance for the 911 center.

Fort Pierce Intro to Lip Reading:
Adult (18 and over) introductory one hour lesson on how learning lip reading can be beneficial to your life. $25.00 fee payable by check or cash will be collected at door.
Attendees will be invited to attend additional four weeks of Lip Reading 101 classes every Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 pm in the same location, for $20 for all four weeks.

Working hard to form a chapter in Volusia County! A summer social brought more than 11 folks of all ages together to share hearing stories and support one another. November features information about CART demonstrations.
Exciting news to share is that the Volusia County Public Library System has installed hearing loops in August at six regional libraries: Daytona City Island, DeLand, Deltona, New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach, Port Orange.
