Tips for clearer meetings

  • Turn on Zoom's caption option in your own settings so captions appear automatically in future meetings.
  • If you use hearing aids or a cochlear implant with Bluetooth, connect them to your device before joining for clearer sound.
  • A larger screen makes captions easier to read. If you only have a phone, turn it sideways.

Common questions

How do I find out about the next meeting?

Upcoming meetings are listed at the top of this page and on the Florida events calendar, each with a registration link. Sign up for HLAA-FL email updates to get dates by email, or contact us to ask about upcoming meetings or suggest a speaker.

Can I watch a meeting I missed?

Often, yes. HLAA-FL records meetings when the presenter agrees and shares the link in email updates. HLAA national's HearingU library keeps recordings of its webinars online with captions.

Are online hearing loss support groups free?

Yes. HLAA-FL Zoom meetings, HLAA national virtual chapters and HearingU webinars are all free. You do not need to be an HLAA member to register or attend. Some webinar recordings are posted afterward so you can watch on your own schedule with captions.

Are the meetings captioned?

Yes. HLAA-FL and HLAA national meetings use live captions so people with any degree of hearing loss can follow along. In Zoom, turn captions on with the CC or Show Captions button. If a meeting uses a professional captioner, the host will tell you how to view the caption stream.

I am not comfortable with Zoom. Can someone help me?

Yes. Many members were new to Zoom once. Register for a meeting and email HLAA-FL beforehand, and a volunteer can walk you through joining, turning on captions and using the chat. Zoom also has a free test meeting at zoom.us/test where you can practice before the real thing.

Do I have to turn on my camera or speak?

No. You can join with your camera off and listen or read captions. Questions can be typed into the chat. Many people attend several meetings before they say anything, and that is completely fine. Meetings are relaxed and nobody is called on unexpectedly.
