How HLAA membership works in Florida

HLAA membership is handled by the Hearing Loss Association of America, the national organization. When you join or renew on hearingloss.org you automatically become a member of HLAA-FL, the Florida state association, and you are welcome at any Florida chapter or support group. There is no separate state or chapter membership fee to be part of HLAA-FL.

Join online in a few minutes using the button above. Then find a chapter near you, or join one of the virtual meetings if no chapter is close.

How joining supports Florida

Membership numbers matter. When HLAA-FL talks with Florida agencies, legislators and venues about captioning, hearing loops and communication access, the number of Floridians who belong to HLAA is part of the story. Your membership also keeps you connected to what is happening in Florida through the HLAA-FL newsletter and chapter events.

Membership dues go to HLAA national. If you want to support our Florida work financially, please also consider a donation or sponsorship to HLAA-FL.

Complimentary HLAA membership for veterans

HLAA offers complimentary membership to veterans of the U.S. armed forces. It is the same full membership, at no cost, in recognition of how common hearing loss and tinnitus are after military service. HLAA also runs a virtual chapter for veterans that meets online with captions, and many Florida chapters have veteran members who can share what worked for them with VA hearing services.

A member-led organization since 1979

Howard E. "Rocky" Stone, founder of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People, now HLAA

HLAA began in 1979 as Self Help for Hard of Hearing People (SHHH), founded by Howard E. "Rocky" Stone, who believed people with hearing loss should speak for themselves. Florida's state association was incorporated in 1997 as SHHH Florida. Rocky's idea still shapes HLAA: volunteers with hearing loss lead every chapter and every state association.

Common questions

Do I have to be an HLAA member to attend a Florida chapter meeting?

No. Chapter meetings and HLAA-FL virtual meetings are open to anyone with hearing loss and their family and friends. Membership is encouraged because it supports the organization that makes the meetings possible, and members receive Hearing Life magazine, discounts and a vote in the organization.

Is there a separate membership for HLAA-FL or my chapter?

No. One HLAA membership covers national, the Florida state association and every chapter. Some chapters ask for small voluntary contributions to cover room rental, captioning or refreshments, but that is a local decision and is not a membership fee. Ask your chapter leader what they do.

How do veterans get free HLAA membership?

HLAA offers complimentary membership to veterans of the U.S. armed forces. Go to the HLAA membership page at hearingloss.org, choose the veteran membership option and complete the form. Veterans also have their own HLAA virtual chapter, which meets online with captions, and are welcome at every Florida chapter.

Are HLAA membership dues tax deductible?

HLAA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and part of your dues may be deductible depending on the value of benefits you receive, such as the magazine. HLAA states the deductible portion on its membership page and receipt. Donations to HLAA-FL, the Florida state association, are handled separately and are deductible to the extent allowed by law.
