Common questions

Do I need to be an HLAA member to attend a meeting?

No. Chapter meetings, support groups and HLAA-FL Zoom meetings are free and open to anyone with hearing loss, plus family and friends. Membership in HLAA supports the work and comes with extra benefits, but it is never required to walk in the door or join a call.

Are meetings accessible if I cannot hear well in groups?

That is the whole point. HLAA meetings are designed for people who struggle to hear. Zoom meetings use live captions, and many in-person chapters use a hearing loop, CART captioning or an assistive listening system. If you need a specific accommodation, tell the chapter before you come and they will do their best.

What if there is no chapter in my part of Florida?

Join a statewide Zoom meeting or a national virtual chapter while you look. If a few people in your area want to meet, HLAA-FL can help you start a support group. It takes three unrelated HLAA members and a willingness to meet monthly to get going.

Is HLAA the same as the Florida Association of the Deaf?

No. The Florida Association of the Deaf serves the Deaf community, where American Sign Language is the primary language. HLAA serves people with hearing loss who mostly use spoken language, hearing aids, cochlear implants and captions. Many people find help in both. HLAA-FL is the Florida State Association of HLAA.
